In the seven and a half years since the Vertical Flight Society (VFS) held its first Transformative Vertical Flight (TVF) symposium on electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft in 2014, the electrification of the air transport industry has become a global movement touching almost every aviation segment and continent including Asia.
EHang, the China-based eVTOL developer, said that the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) has issued a special conditions approval for the EH216 eVTOL aircraft.
EHang announced on Dec. 23 that it had received the inaugural order for its winged VT-30 autonomous aerial vehicle, and continued to list orders made throughout January 2022.
EHang, the Guangzhou-based developer of eVTOL aircraft, announced that China’s aviation authority is close to certifying the EHang EH216.
On Sept. 3, EHang conducted flight trials of the EH216 in Estonia, flying 5 miles (8 km) from Tartu Airport to the Estonian Aviation Museum.

The number of electric VTOL designs in China is growing rapidly with significant funding.
Actor, director and activist Christopher Reeve said in a 1996 speech, “So many of our dreams at first seem impossible, then they seem improbable, and then, when we summon the will, they soon become inevitable.”
Japan’s “Public-Private Council for the Air Mobility Revolution” — established in 2018 by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) — has set the target of 2023 for eVTOL operations in Japan.
After many months of rumors and speculation, Guangzhou, China-based EHang acknowledged in a tweet on March 9, “EHang has been developing long-range electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) vehicle for years.
The website eVTOL Insights published its “Power Book” in January, its “definitive list of the influencers, innovators and leaders from the last 12 months.” The intent is to recognize excellence and achievement in the electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) industry. To be released every year, the Power Book 2021 “recognizes 21 of the industry’s brightest individuals from across the world and their company’s achievements in 2020.”
