Elroy Takes Off

San Francisco-based Elroy Air conducted the first flight of its 1,215-lb (550-kg) Chaparral hybrid-electric, heavy-lift cargo drone. The one-minute, Aug. 14 flight was conducted at Camp Roberts, California. The Chaparral is being developed to autonomously deliver 250-500 lb (100-225 kg) of payload for medical supply delivery, disaster response, and remote military missions, but could also be used by commercial carriers such as FedEx or UPS. With the 250-lb payload, which is carried in a cargo pod, Elroy calculates a 300-mile (500-km) range.
