Moya Goes Hybrid

Brazilian eVTOL developer Moya Aero has begun developing a hybrid-electric version of its tandem-wing cargo drone. Alexandre “Zara” Zaramela (shown, far right), CEO of the São José dos Campos, São Paulo-based company told Aviation International News (AIN) in an Aug. 1 article that the change will increase the range from about 60 nm (110 km) with its battery-electric version to 163 nm (300 km) as a series-hybrid eVTOL aircraft, with the same payload of 440 lb (200 kg). The new version will still use batteries for takeoff and landing, but a small piston engine will generate electricity for the cruise flight, as a range extender for the drone, which is primarily targeting uses like logistics and agricultural spraying. Zaramela said it has letters of intent for 119 drones. The battery-electric version first flew in November 2023 and the company still hopes to gain its type certification in 2026 and begin deliveries in 2027.
