Roland Berger Sees Huge eVTOL Potential
European consultancy Roland Berger presented the conclusions of a UAM study at the virtual Farnborough International Airshow Connect event on July 23. In the webinar, entitled “Global Urban Air Summit: Future of UAM,” the company stated that it expected some 7,000 eVTOL aircraft will be carrying passengers in UAM services by 2030, 47,000 by 2040 and 161,000 by 2050 (all analysis was marked as “Pre-COIVD-19”). This latter figure was split as 36% air taxis (flying within a city) and 35% airport shuttles — both with ranges of 9–31 miles (15–50 km) and 29% between cities — scheduled flights on defined routes of 31–155 miles (50–250 km). A survey of top aerospace executives indicated that 13% expected UAM to generate revenue within 5 years, 51% in 5–10 years, 34% in more than 10 years (and 2% never). Roland Berger analysts predicted 58 September / October 2020 a total of €1B by 2030, €14B by 2040 and €77B by 2050 (with one euro averaging around $1.10 USD during the first half of 2020). This latter revenue figure was split 10% city taxi, 50% airport shuttle and 40% intercity. (Sources: Roland Berger)
