The information provided here is as accurate as possible; however, eVTOL information from China is sometimes sparse, incomplete or conflicting. China is promoting what they call the "low-altitude economy"—a new push for general aviation—which includes both crewed and uncrewed passenger and air cargo eVTOL aircraft.
Founded in 2022, CoolFly is based in Hangzhou, Zhejiang, China and is in the business of designing and manufacturing passenger electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft for advanced air mobility (AAM). Wayne Lee, CEO is quoted on the company's website, “We are not just manufacturing aircraft, we are architecting a new way of life. We aim to make personal eVTOL as ubiquitous as bicycles—affordable and accessible to everyone in the world.”
Standing Platform passenger eVTOL multicopter (prototype)
The Standing Platform is a one passenger eVTOL prototype multicopter aircraft. The pilot stands in an open cockpit and has two handles to hold onto. It is unknown if the pilot flies the flying platform or if the aircraft is flown remotely.
The estimated cruise speed of the multicopter aircraft is approximately 32 km/h (20 mph). The aircraft has four propellers, four electric motors and is powered by battery packs. Each propeller is located inside a large hexagon open-framed propeller housing. There is no protective mesh on the top or bottom of the propeller housings; however, there is protective mesh on the sides of the propeller housings. The estimated maximum weight of of the aircraft is 70 kg (154 lb). The fuselage is made from carbon fiber composite to give the aircraft a high strength to low weight ratio. The multicopter lands on small fixed skid landing gear.
Specifications:
- Aircraft type: Passenger eVTOL multicopter (prototype)
- Piloting: 1 pilot. The pilot stands in an open cockpit and has two handles to hold onto during flight.. It is unknown if the pilot flies the flying platform of if the aircraft is flown remotely.
- Cruise speed: ~32 km/h (20 mph)
- Maximum payload weight: ~70 kg (154 lb)
- Propellers: 4 propellers (each propeller is located inside a hexagon open-framed propeller housing)
- Electric motors: 4 electric motors
- Power source: Battery packs
- Fuselage: Carbon fiber composite
- Cockpit: Open cockpit
- Landing gear: Has short fixed skid landing gear just under where the pilot stands
- Safety features: Distributed Electric Propulsion (DEP) uses multiple propellers or electric ducted fans, each powered by electric motors, to increase safety through redundancy. If one or more components fail, the remaining ones can still ensure a safe landing. There are also redundancies of critical components in the sub-systems of the aircraft providing safety through redundancy. Having multiple redundant systems on any aircraft decreases having any single point of failure. There is also a whole aircraft emergency ballistic parachute in case of an unexpected inflight emergency.
