Vira Drones was founded in November 2018 by CEO Valeriy Gorshkov and CTO Igor Maslov. The company has offices in both Germany and Switzerland. The company is in the business of making medium-lift and heavy-lift, air cargo and fire-rescue, hybrid-electric vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) drones for advanced air mobility (AAM). On January 26, 2022, Vira Drones was acquired by ILUS International. (Image credit: Vira Drones)
The company is also designing several modular heavy-lift air cargo drones that will connect to each other to form a larger aircraft and these drones will be able to haul heavier and larger-sized payloads. The company's drones are being designed to have a long flight range, a long flight time and be able to fly in most weather conditions.
M-450 fire rescue hybrid-electric VTOL concept design drone
The M-450 is a fire-fighting and passenger rescue hybrid-electric VTOL drone concept design aircraft. The drone can be flown by autopilot and has an option to be flown by remote control. The aircraft can hold at least four adults who weight 112.5 kg (248 lb) each or less. The drone can carry more people, including children if the passengers are lighter in weight than its maximum payload weight.
The approximate cruise speed is 125 km/h (78 mph), the predicted range of the rescue drone is 150 km (93 m) and has a proposed maximum altitude of 3,000 m (9,843 ft). The empty weight of the aircraft is calculated to be 300 kg (661 lb), with an anticipated maximum payload weight of 450 kg (992 lb) and has a projected maximum takeoff weight of 750 kg (1,653 lb). The drone has four propellers protected by ducts, has four electric motors and has a hybrid-electric power source. If the aircraft has a carbon fiber composite fuselage, this will provide a high strength and low weight ratio for the multicopter drone. The drone has fixed tricycle wheeled landing gear.
It is important to remember that all concept design aircraft specifications are estimated and can or will change as prototypes and production models are made, tested and flown with real world avionics, components and payloads. The drone can be towed behind a truck, hauled on a trailer or fit inside an intermodal container for ground travel.
Full-scale mock-up
While a full-scale mock-up has been made of the aircraft, it is unknown if the full-scale mock-up is a flying prototype or only a mock-up drone. The mock-up has been shown to the public at a trade show. The full-scale mock-up has also been successfully transported by ground travel using a truck and trailer.
Aerial mission applications
The fire-rescue drone can be outfitted with fire suppression equipment to fight high-rise fires or wild files. The M-450 can also be used to rescue people in any building or location during a fire or any type of natural disaster. The company also foresees this drone used for surveillance to detect wild fires before they get out of hand. In addition to fire-rescue missions, the drone can be used for agricultural missions, humanitarian missions and in war zones.

- Safety features: Distributed Electric Propulsion (DEP) means having multiple propellers (or electric ducted fans) and multiple electric motors on an aircraft so if one or more propellers (or electric ducted fans) or some electric motors fail, the other working propellers (or electric ducted fans) and electric motors can safely land the aircraft. DEP provides safety through redundancy for its passengers or cargo. There are also redundancies of critical components in the sub-systems of the aircraft providing safety through redundancy for its passengers or cargo. Having multiple redundant systems on any aircraft decreases having any single point of failure.
